Redeemer to Host Family Promise Day Center

Family Promise Inc, (also known as Interfaith Hospitality Network) was looking for a location to start a new affiliate to serve all of Cumberland County. FP provides emergency housing and training for displaced families with children. Several churches were meeting to begin planning the new start and to recruit other churches in the area. Redeemer Lutheran on Landis Avenue in Vineland owns a home across Landis avenue that had been used as a host house for the Gloucester County affiliate of FP. Over the winter a broken pipe forced the closing of the 110 year-old house.

The damage and resulting mold and mildew forced the entire gutting of the home. Hearing of the need of Family Promise, Redeemer offered the home for Family Promise use. The Fuller Center of the NJ Pines, headquartered in Tabernacle, NJ, was contacted to provide volunteer services for the re-construction. Guide One insurance settled the damage claim, ServiceMaster, Inc. gutted and sanitized the home and work was begun in May to restore the Victorian home to its previous charm. Code upgrades were installed with new wiring, plumbing, floors and walls.

Work will continue throughout the summer of 2010 as Family Promise organizes and recruits the 13 churches needed to open. A director will hired in the Spring of 2011 when the 18th affiliate in New Jersey will begin hosting families in the congregations.

Mississippi Mission

Volunteers from the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Vineland, joined ten other people from five southern New Jersey Lutheran Churches on a six day mission trip to Mississippi to help reconstruct homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Thrivent Builds, part of the Thrivent Financial For Lutherans Mission Trips, has been sending teams to the Gulf Coast all year long. They assist Habitant for Humanity in building homes for families who lost their housing in the hurricane. The Gulf Coast Habitat affiliate has constructed 450 homes in the past three years. The local team returned February 13, after they assisted with roofing on one site and base decking at another in Biloxi.

The team braved sleet and snow and 35-40 degree weather as they diligently worked daily at the construction site. Each night they joined other teams at the central camp where they shared stories of their experiences.

Congratulations on a job well done!
